Crampton's outside line at Canada Corner nets Road America win
Canada Corner is a right-hand plunge at the far end of Road America where the smart line is a tight arc off the inside curb and the gravel outside chews up anyone who tries anything else. On the 19th of 24 laps, with Scott Rickard tucked into that safe inside line and defending like a man who had led most of the race, TJ Crampton picked the door nobody uses. He drove around the outside. The gravel bit at his right rear, the throttle came in later than he wanted, and when he cleared Rickard's nose he had the lead of the race. It was still his five laps later when he took the checkered flag.
"I don't know how I made it stick around the outside of you, Scott, on Canada Corner," Crampton said afterward. "I was like, it's either going to work really good or work really bad."
It worked really good. Rickard, who has finished ahead of Crampton in 22 of their last 30 shared starts, could only shrug. "I didn't make him go around the outside of Canada," he said, "and he still did it. So not much I could have done differently."
Road America has been Crampton's happiest track. Tonight's win pushed his average across two career starts here to 1.5. He came in with 13 career wins over 16 seasons in this league. He has 14 now. And in a season that began with a 29th at Indianapolis and a DNS at Chicagoland, one road course night moved him from 20th in points to 13th and stapled his name to the schedule's road round like a business card.
Jonathon Hernandez led the field to green from the pole and handed the top spot to Rickard before the opening lap was complete. The No. 05 Mustang stretched out to a comfortable gap over a chasing pack that had Matt Burgess sitting on his gearbox for 11 straight laps. The minimum margin was under a tenth. Burgess is a veteran with 159 starts and three career wins in this series, and if you did not know how deep his history runs you might have thought he was queuing up to make a move. On lap 11 he made one, ducking under Rickard for the lead.
That was the setup for the night's turn. Two laps later Hernandez, who had climbed back to second on strategy, tripped the pit road speed sensor on his stop. iRacing added a 15-second hold to his day. It cost him track position he never fully recovered. By the time the No. 88 was back in traffic and turning laps, the front of the field had reset and he was staring at three cars he could no longer catch. Hernandez finished sixth.
Rickard retook the lead on lap 14. Burgess dropped to third. Crampton, who had run third for most of that opening battle without ever getting a clean shot at either car, now had the runner-up spot and a lead car whose pace had eased off. The next 11 laps became the second sustained duel of the night. Rickard led. Crampton lived off his rear bumper, gap under a tenth every time down the front stretch. When Crampton finally slipped past at Canada Corner on lap 19, they simply swapped roles. Two laps later they were separated by 23 thousandths of a second.
Crampton had thought about pitting on lap 11. He said so on the cool-down. "I wanted to pit on lap 11, come to 12, but I decided against it and I followed you." Staying out committed him to the fight. When Rickard's tires started giving up their bite in the middle sector, Crampton was there and set up for the one line nobody else was going to try.
Behind them, Burgess held on for third, his best finish of the season by 10 places. His first four starts read 13th, 11th, seventh, and 24th. He now sits eighth in points, five spots better than he was this morning. Thomas Harmon crossed fourth, quietly. Four straight top-fives keeps him second in points. Kyle McCoy, the points leader, ran alone in fifth for most of the night, muttering on the radio that he just wanted to see somebody else out there. James Watson finished seventh. Road America is his best track in this league. He has two prior wins here, and while a top-10 is not the same story as a podium, his climb from ninth to sixth in the standings is the kind of quiet gain that matters more in August than in April.
The season now runs seven races to the chase cutoff. McCoy sits on 216 points. Harmon is six back. Rickard is 11 back. Jonathon Hernandez is fourth, 41 out. Anyone chasing the top three needs Road America nights to happen for them, not to them.
Crampton got his tonight. On the cool-down, he had one final thing to say to Rickard, the man he had passed on the outside of a corner that eats outside lines for a living.
"I've based my breaking zone on yours, Scott."
